If you want to upgrade over WMM but stay free your options are Video Spin, WAX, Zwei-stein, ZS4 Video Editor, and JahShaka. I don’t know if they will get you quite as far as you want, but all are free so worth investigating/trying at least.

If you are willing to pay then I would say AVS Video Editor, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Corel Ulead Video Studio, or Adobe Premiere Elements. They all have free trials so you can check them out and see if any are worth paying for.

I think Sony has the reputation of being easiest to learn. Its a solid choice. It has a decent user base, books, and online community presence. There are several versions, so you can keep moving up if you have to in the long run.

I think Adobe Premiere Elements is the most robust of the lot. It would be a really good choice. But the caveat is that its likely the most expensive of the bunch. It will work well with other Adobe products such as Photoshop (Vegas should too, but Premiere will work smoother as both products are by Adobe). And if at some point you need to step it up, there is the big brother Adobe Premiere Pro (expensive, but truly professional grade). And like Sony, it has a good user base, books, and online community for support.
